Choosing the insulation

A cold store gains heat through every surface, so wall, roof and floor are all insulated. The two decisions are material and thickness:

• Material — rigid PU foam gives a lower thermal conductivity per unit thickness and carries load well, so it is common for panels and freezer rooms. EPS (high-density grades) is a cost-effective choice for many chiller and cold-room build-ups.
• Thickness — driven by your target room temperature, ambient conditions and the material's conductivity. Lower target temperatures and hotter climates call for thicker insulation.
